Ten Ways to Improve digestion without taking supplements or pills

  1. "Chew your liquid and drink your food” (yogic philosophy)
  2. If emotionally upset, wait until it passes before dining
  3. Eat simple meals, avoid over seasoning or spicing
  4. Avoid cooking foods that can be taken raw
  5. Take three to five minutes to rest before a meal
  6. Avoid reading or watching TV while eating
  7. Soak beans overnight, rinse and cook with fresh water
  8. Chew on fennel seeds (like in Indian restaurants)
  9. Use ginger powder in recipes
  10. Eat smaller portions

Herbal tea is a wonderful addition to a daily health program and can do wonders for digestion. Try yerba maté or green tea in the morning. Both are naturally caffeinated. I like peppermint tea for a variety of reasons; it relaxes the stomach before a meal and is a bit of a stimulant for late night lectures. I also have yogi/chi tea once in a while and it is very simple to make.

Yogi Chi Tea

5 whole cloves
1 inch piece of ginger, sliced
5 cardamom pods
1 tsp. fennel seeds
1 tsp. licorice root
3 cups water
3 cups vanilla rice or soy milk
Maple syrup, raw honey or brown rice syrup to taste

In a wide bottom pot, boil the herbs in water for five minutes. Lower the heat and simmer for five or ten minutes. Add the milk and bring to a simmer for five more minutes. Turn off the heat and let sit a few minutes to cool. Add sweetener if desired. Decorate with a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg.
